Over Budget! Are you kidding me?!
How to approach a Triple Constraint?
Projects are created to achieve business results that typically originate to satisfy a problem, need, or opportunity. Therefore, it is essential to understand how to meet business needs through effective project management when the triple constraint boundaries of time, cost, and scope are crossed. To effectively manage a project that has crossed these boundaries, one must be creative, flexible, and able to manage change quickly. For instance, if a project is behind schedule, the natural thing to do is change the due date. If changing the due date doesn't work, the scope can be reduced by reducing certain features to dedicate more resources to move the schedule forward.
Ultimately, my approach would be one rooted in action because in my experience, when you passively watch a project unfold, it will continue to unfold until the point where it is unmanageable. The use of PM (Project Management) Tools would be relied heavily upon to ensure that cost does not exceed the budget, schedule management is tracked, activities are defined, and deliverables/milestones are identified (Westland, 2018). All in all, there's no easy way juggle a triple constraint; however, when you consider the impact of your changes and ask specific questions about the customer's expectations, this will allow you the opportunity to make a more sound decision.
